Having painted since I was really young with a seriousness that went beyond
a hobby I look back on how I got into sculpting and can pin it down to the
Installation I did in Machynlleth in 1993. It was a large show based on
Angels, called Messengers, which took a year and a half to research and
ended up with me producing over a hundred pieces of artwork filling four
rooms and an installation that comprised 3000 pieces of bamboo, stone icons,
chicken wire and muslin.
After that I did a series of box-collages that used lots of
three-dimensional bits of artwork and I remember a friend saying how my
pieces were starting to look more like sculptures than paintings .

BACKGROUND
Born in Old Hill, part of the Black Country, West Midlands, in 1954.
No formal Art training beyond 'O' level so completely self-taught.
Now living and working in Much Birch, Herefordshire and regularly exhibiting
work in Galleries around Hereford/Shropshire/Gloucester and Bristol.
As yet there have been no big Public commissions but lots of private
garden-based work, supplimented with Gallery pieces of a moderate size.
Commissions can be undertaken and prices/delivery-times discussed via e-mail
or by post. |

In Hereford I visited a monumental mason's yard and came home with a bit of
Bath stone that had been reclaimed from an old church window and had a go at
carving something from the soft stone. That was pretty much it.........I was
hooked and sculpture has been my principal interest ever since.
I've used lots of different types of stone and love visiting quarries to try
a variety of colours and textures, but I use Forest-of-Dean stone a lot,
because it is local and looks so good outdoors. It blends into the landscape
easily and looks wonderful wet or dry. I laways go to a little old family
quarry near Parkend in the Forest-of-Dean. |
